Cooking Fror Dogs- Winter Issue 2005

WELCOME to COOKING FOR DOGS
by Valerie Sharp

Hello Folks. I hope that you have tried some of the last Newsletter’s recipes, and that your dogs are loving them. I had planned on talking about how to make a wonderful Doggy Birthday cake and a really amazing veggie mash for that wonderful glowing coat health. However as the Iceland Sheepdog has received the right to go for Championship in CKC starting March 1st, 2006, it just seemed right to go with Dog Show treats for this issue. Don’t worry - I will do the Birthday cake for the spring one :) So here are three really great show dog treat recipes, starting with the easiest to make.

Doggie Liver Treats
1 pd raw liver (beef is best, but can use chicken or pork instead)
2 cloves whole fresh garlic or one large tablespoon of minced
1 box of Corn Muffin Mix

Heat oven to Temp on muffin box. In food processor, mix liver and garlic till liquid. Mix in box of muffin mix. Spread onto cookie sheet. Bake until very firm then cut into strips. Freezes well or needs to be stored in fridge.

Chicken Show Brownies
10 oz can Chicken (or Turkey, Ham or Fish of any kind, no raw meat in this one)
1 and half cups water (or can use left over potato or veggie water for added vitamins)
2 cloves garlic or 1 Tbsp minced
2 eggs (lightly beaten, duck or chicken)
1 and 3/4th cups cornmeal
2 and ¼ cups whole wheat flour

Oven at 350. Blend chicken in food processor, add water and garlic, blend. Gradually add flour and cornmeal until not quite as thick as brownie dough. Cook 30 min or until the sides pull away and the middle is done. Let cool then slice and dice. Freeze to store.

Then the big guns My Liver Show Brownies
1 pd raw liver (beef is best)
1 and half cups of flour (can use white or half white/whole wheat)
1 and half Tbsp of garlic
1/3 cup molasses (Fancy is best but regular will work as well)

Mix in big bowl, will be thick batter. Bake 30 min, prick with fork at 10 and 20 min. Store in fridge. Can be frozen but does not store as well as the above in this regards. If sliced into thin strips will hold together in hand for a fair while as you are training stacks and holds, so that dog can work and nibble at it, etc..

Happy showing! And Happy Baking, and hopefully a very Happy Icelandic Sheepdog.
