Calgary Kennel Club Show
Report by Robert Lowther, Candise Berard and Scott Berard
Whoever said that the first day of a three day dog show was Friday, was not telling the truth! The first day of a three day dog show is the Monday before the Friday. There’s the bathing and grooming of the precious pouch; the cleaning of the cage, kennel and crate; the preparation for the attire to be worn over the weekend, and that’s just for starters. The true "first day" of the dog show is the Thursday afternoon when you’re waiting in line with everyone else, in order to get into the ring and setup your home for the next three days. Even then you’ve spent the night before getting the car packed with your tables, chairs and X-pens, and display materials, and of course, the inventory for tack box sorted out.
Finally Friday arrives, and it’s time to get to the show. Depending on what time you show usually determines when you will arrive. This Friday we showed at 9:00 AM so getting there early meant a 6:00 AM alarm! Two Icelandics took the stage on Friday: Pineridge Laski, and Lavendels Vindur. Vindur won Best Puppy, Best Male, Best of Winners, and Best of Breed. Laski received Best Canadian Bred and Reserve Winners. Vindur gets one point, becoming the first Icelandic to be awarded points at a CKC sanctioned show, since the beginning of March when the ISD went into the Group 7 - Herding group, as one of the fully recognized CKC breeds.
Saturday was a really busy day for all of us, even if the herding group didn’t show until 1:00PM. Ralph Biggs and Audur Vasldottir came down from Coronation, bringing with them a few of their fine dogs, Pineridge Vanadis and Kappi. This being their first dog show they had attended they were both excited to be here. With the three males and a bitch in the show, we now had good variety to display for the judges and spectators. The dogs were pre-registered in the following classes, Junior Puppy: Lavendels Vindur; Canadian Bred Male: Pineridge Laski; Open Male: Kappi; Canadian Bred Female: Pineridge Vanadis.
When the judging was all said and done, Vindur was awarded Best Puppy, Laski - Best Canadian Bred, Kappi – Best Male, and Vanadis – Best Canadian Female and Best of Breed. This was the first show for Kappi and Vanadis, and they were both awarded two points for their efforts, what an amazing day! Kappi’s points were received for beating two other males, and Vanadis for sweeping all others, achieving Best of Breed. The reaction from the judge on Saturday was very rewarding, she informed Ralph that she felt Vanadis was "a really nice dog". Compliments like that from a show judge are very rare and very encouraging.
Each dog was happy and it showed that they wanted to be in the ring. Afterwards we got a group picture of the four dogs, and Scott and Candise who had been hosting, had everyone over for dinner. Much dog-play followed.
Sunday was another early morning show time 9:00 AM. Today only Vindur and Laski were going into the ring. The judge picked Laski as Best of Breed and Best of Winners, and Vindur got best of puppy. While handing out the ribbons the judge asked what was our opinion regarding the ISD going into the proposed Group 8 – Spitz class. I replied honestly that I felt it would be advantageous for the breed to be involved in this new class.
